Neighborhood Transportation Service (NTS) is holding its second annual fund raising
event. NTS is a nonprofit organization and a partner agency of the United Way of East
Central Iowa. They provide transportation to the citizens of Cedar Rapids, Marion and
Hiawatha during evening and weekend hours when city buses are not in service. Over
87% of the clients served have an annual income of less than $18,000 per year. NTS fills
an unmet need in the community by providing the service.
NTS was located in the Ground Transportation Center (GTC) prior to the 2008 flood.
Water rose to the ceiling and everything was destroyed in the main office. Also
destroyed were the contents of the driver’s office and the maintenance building where
vehicle supplies were stored. Buses and vans were moved to the outer perimeter of
town for safety. After several moves, NTS has relocated to Harambee House where they
are slowly recovering but they need community support for the fundraising event.
NTS will be holding their “Chip-In” for NTS Texas Hold ‘Em and Casino Night, Emceed
by Liz Mathis of Four Oaks, on Friday, February 27 from 6:00 P.M. through 11:00 P.M. at
the Clarion Hotel located 525 33rd Ave. SW in Cedar Rapids. Tickets are $50 for couples,
$30 for singles and $50 additional for the tournament. There will be a Texas Hold ‘Em
tournament, black jack, roulette, and bingo. The Clarion will offer a light menu and cash
bar and several local guest celebrities will be in attendance. There will be something for
everyone with door prize drawings every half hour and a silent auction for various gift
baskets. Proceeds from this event will benefit youth programs.
What a great cure for the “Winter Blahs”!
